Heavier and studier than expectedJun 14, 2010 This is a VERY STURDY aluminum bar. It is heavy (but not too heavy since it is made of aluminum) and definitely not flimsy.
The cylinder has a flat side (bottom) that prevents rolling. It also has a rubber/plastic material on the top for laptop traction and to prevent scratches.
My main concern is that this device is somewhat heavy (0.6 pounds on my electronic scale). I wish the device was lighter, less sturdier, and cheaper.
Do MacBook owners need this?
I have a MacBook Pro (with dedicated Nvidia 9600 GT graphics card) running Windows 7. Unfortunately, I can't shut off the Nvidia 9600 graphics card with Windows 7 as I can with Mac OS. The Nvidia 9600 card creates tremendous amount of heat that can make the laptop run very hot that makes the fan constantly running. Although the all aluminum design of MacBooks dissipates heat very well and has a high degree of heat tolerance, high temperature is never good for electronic devices and tends to shorten their lifepan. Furthermore, the fan noise can be a distraction when one is having a meeting.
This bar levitates the back bottom portion of the MacBooks that contains both the CPU and GPU (Nvidia 9600) and allows air between the surface and MacBooks for far cooler operation. The result is your MacBook will not run as hot nor will the fan noise be as loud.
If you have MacBook (not MacBook Pro) that does not have a dedicated graphics card, then you probably will not need this. When I run Mac OS with the dedicated Nvidia 9600 graphics card turned off, the heat is very manageable even when I use my laptop for long durations.
So I recommend this device (or something similar) for those who use MacBook Pro with Windows or those who use Mac Pro with Mac OS with its dedicated graphics card turned on.

Agree w/ Sentry!Mar 26, 2010 It's hard to believe that someone is dumb enough to pay $40 for an aluminum bar. You can just stick two pens at the bottom to elevate your laptop if it's an absolute necessary. Elevating doesn't mean anything if your laptop fan is not strong enough to flow out the hot air (in this case you need an external fan). There are countless ways to elevate your laptop w/o spending any money!

Don't waste your money...Nov 06, 2009 Way overpriced for something as simple as an aluminum bar. Please, don't waste your money on this, go out and make your own.
The only thing different between this and a small metal bar you can buy at home depot, is that this is cut flat on the bottom (so it won't roll), and has some rubber pads so that your laptop doesn't slip off. Both of which can be easily done by yourself for much cheaper.
Seriously, I hope that there aren't too many people out there who are stupid enough to waste that kind of money (nearly $50!) on this piece bar.

Pricey, but sweetMay 06, 2009 Keeps the laptop much cooler, and fits easily in bag. Not cheap, but built to last a lifetime.
