Handy Little DeviceAug 08, 2009 This thing is tiny. That's the first thing I thought when I first saw it. It's made of the same material as my 15 inch MacBook Pro, and extends from about half the width to the full width. It's made very well, the USB cord for the fan in on the left side (where most of the heat in a MBP is generated, go ahead and feel the underside of yours) tucks in nicely for storage (the whole thing is really quite compact when folded up) has a piggyback plug so you don't lose the use of the USB port, and the thing is basically a giant aluminum heat sink.
It raises the keyboard to a slightly more comfortable position. So that's a small plus.
Does it actually WORK, though? The answer is yes, if you position it properly. There's a gel pad of heat conductive material on the device, that should be placed as close to the hot part (the area near the power cord plug in) as possible. On the plus side, the device will not stick out further than your MBP, so everything looks nice.
I purchased this item because my wireless broadband USB card was raising the temperature of my CPU to 90 degrees Celcius or so, according to iStat Nano and SMC Fan Control. It's now hovering at about 70 degrees Celcius, a vast improvement. I play many games on my MBP through Crossover, and it helps greatly with them as well.
Why 4 stars?
There wasn't really a manual beyond the description on the back of the box... they are very close to the Apple Aesthetic in terms of packaging and presentation. Took me a while to figure out how to get it just so. Overall this is an excellent purchase, if a bit spendy. But, like most Apple products... you get what you pay for, etc. Also like Apple products, be sure it's what you want.
Bought this from [...], had a small problem with my order, was promptly addressed.
